Zach Farley's Full Bio
Zach Farley, a lifelong resident of Patagonia, Arizona, is a multifaceted artist, musician, and instrument maker who embodies the spirit of his hometown through his creative venture, Home Grown Instruments. With over four decades in Patagonia, Zach’s deep connection to the community and its natural surroundings shapes his unique approach to crafting musical instruments and creating music that resonates with authenticity and passion.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born and raised in Patagonia, Zach’s love for music began in his early teens when he picked up the guitar, partly to cope with the tragic loss of his father in a motorcycle accident. This early connection to music as a form of expression laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to the art. His creative journey took a significant turn during his time at High Spirits Flutes, where he developed exceptional skills as one of the world’s finest flute tuners, mastering the delicate craft of instrument tuning.
Founding Home Grown Instruments
Zach’s path to founding Home Grown Instruments was sparked by a moment of inspiration at a Native American music festival in Phoenix, where he encountered a gourd flute. Intrigued by its unique sound and organic craftsmanship, he began experimenting with making his own flutes, marking the beginning of his instrument-making career. What started with gourd flutes evolved into a diverse array of handcrafted instruments, including guitars, ukuleles, dulcimers, drums, shakers, and even a saxophone. Using materials like bamboo, agave, sunflower, yucca, PVC pipe, and cigar boxes, Zach transforms everyday and repurposed materials into instruments of extraordinary beauty and sound. His innovative work was highlighted in a 2017 episode of Arizona Illustrated by KUAZ TV, showcasing his ability to create music from the ordinary.
Musical Career and Releases
In addition to his craftsmanship, Zach is an accomplished musician with two released CDs. His first album, Southern Migration, draws inspiration from the annual sandhill crane migration near Patagonia, capturing the majesty and grace of these birds through a 53-minute journey of eclectic acoustic songs, primarily featuring his native flute work. His second album, Repurposed, showcases the distinctive sounds of his handcrafted instruments. Both albums are available at Creative Spirit Artists Gallery in Patagonia, where his instruments are also sold.
Community Involvement and Philosophy
Beyond his work as a musician and craftsman, Zach is a teacher, artist, inventor, and farmer who values community engagement. He shares his passion for music through lessons in local schools and at the Creative Arts Center, where his wife, Cassina, directs arts programs. Zach’s philosophy centers on merging music with everyday life, believing it offers endless ways to express oneself. He finds deep fulfillment in playing music for diverse audiences, from children’s workshops to funerals, where his performances provide comfort and connection. His involvement extends to environmental restoration, serving as the restoration crew lead for the Borderlands Restoration Network, where he contributes to rebuilding ecosystems in Patagonia.
Personal Life
Zach has been married to his best friend, Cassina, for over two decades. Together, they share a love for Patagonia’s natural beauty, particularly the sandhill crane migrations that inspire Zach’s music. His work reflects a commitment to sustainability, creativity, and community, making him a beloved figure in Patagonia’s vibrant cultural landscape.
